Antonia Singla conquered the stage without hearing the music. At the height of her fame, she disappeared. Half a century later, a young dancer follows her trail to restore her place in history.
Born deaf into a Romani family on the outskirts of Barcelona, La Singla achieved international fame at seventeen. Her powerful gaze and a way of dancing guided by her inner rhythm revolutionised flamenco in the 1960s. Yet, at the height of her career, she vanished from the stage and gradually fell into obscurity.
Half a century later, Helena Kaittani sets out in search of Antonia Singla. Combining archive footage, music, fiction and sound, Paloma Zapata’s film reconstructs the mystery of her disappearance and restores the legacy of an extraordinary artist.
La Singla is a production by La Fábrica Naranja in co-production with the German company Inselfilm Produktion.
